When machines are starting to take decisions
The IoT (Internet Of Things), the big dream of people now a days is the big challenge, not only because the proliferation of technology in all sectors of our life, but because of technology miniaturization, the wireless improvement, high processing into small computers, called microcontrollers, and low power consumption, permitting electronic products being considered in devices like: wearables, disposal, pets, , assets, covering the industrial, metering, medical, smart city, tracking, agriculture and smart home sectors .
On the cloud side, artificial intelligence will be essential in analyzing the vast amount of data generated around the power grid and taking real-time control decisions.
So in the near future machines will be taking decisions on when to turn on or off your washing machine or dishwasher.
That will be the intelligence on the energy company that control when our household appliances run. They will be able to turn them on when the weather is sunny and solar energy will be enough or when demand is otherwise low.
Building a wireless world
All wireless Technologies are welcome, depending on infrastructure on the field, operative costs, energy consumption, security required, hardware, software and license required, there are room for LoRa, Sigfox, Cellular: 2G,3G,4G with all its variations CatM1 and NB for IoT, WiFi, BT, or combinations, or any other RF standard or proprietary.
The Energy issue
Processing and data transmission in a wireless way requires and will need a power source. The energy storage in a battery is converted into a electromagnetic wave, the changes on the waves are information, data is collected on a receiver device and later translated and storage for later use, being retrieved or used to take decisions.
The big challenge now is the efficient use of resources, this includes the electric energy.
Less power consumption means longer time in devices operation, reduction in operative expenses and maintenance and of course more Environmental Conservation.
What we face now is to find a solution to transmit energy in a similar way we do with information in a wireless way or like the popular cell phone charges but longer distances.
Alternatives are to take advantage of laws of Thermodynamics, where literally replies:
“Energy can be changed from one form to another, but it cannot be created or destroyed” and use the law in our side to take energy from movements and use to charge some batteries around, that will means that we can have all the batteries of our houses fully charged (i.e. remote controls, sensors and actuators) while we exercise at home, or we can have the hall lights battery charged as we throw trash on the shut of our building.
Once we surpass 10ft as the “Far-field” technology is doing now, we will we talking about a true wireless world.
On the environmental side we need to mention now that: More than half of our energy comes from fossil fuels extracted from deep of Earth, what has implied a change in our atmosphere called the climate change, that’s why we urgently need to implement clean energy sources that allow our machines to operate longer without affecting environment.
